It was 60 days in the past that the young forward found himself on the pitch at Sunderland, appearing bewildered while Unai Emery scolded him for not reading a pass in behind. At that point, as Villa endured a six-game winless run, the question was whether Rogers' form were an indicator or the reason of the side's wider issues.

“Following Rogers' second strike… Emery discarded his jacket, extended his arms, and let out a triumphant roar.”

On Sunday, however, the sideline response proved to be much more joyous. As the in-form star drilled in his brace-sealing goal to restore Villa's lead, the Spanish tactician tore off his coat, spread his arms and bellowed. Villa marched on to a 10th successive win and after failing to win their opening six games, now sit just three points adrift of the leaders Arsenal.

Are They Serious Challengers?

It remains an exceptionally difficult proposition to resolve. The historical record, the traditional standing of Villa, indicates otherwise. Moreover, they have not been wholly dominant this season, despite the fact the wins have accumulated.

According to Opta, on just two occasions have Villa registered an expected goals figure significantly higher than their opponents. For a side which has just won ten consecutive victories, they look strangely fragile – but currently the fine lines are swinging for them.

The Rogers Recipe

The current approach looks like to exchange chances with rivals before hoping Rogers to rescue them with some precise efforts. This was the case at Leeds, it happened against West Ham, and again versus Manchester United.

His opener originated from a superb shot, arced precisely inside the upright from the corner of the box. The follow-up goal was essentially a somewhat messier replica of his first as he seized on an Ollie Watkins lay-off.

Is It Sustainable?

Common sense dictates no. Against United, the opposition registered a greater number of attempts and more shots on target. The team has triumphed in eight consecutive games by just one goal. They have allowed goals in nearly all of those games.

A statistical correction could be the biggest rival Villa will encounter in the near future. Rogers, in all likelihood, will not continue to thrashing the football into the top corner week in, week out.

A Case for Belief

Could it be another reality where, rather than results trending towards performances, the team's displays improve to justify the wins. Important figures may yet return to peak condition.

• The main striker might resume adding to his goal tally.
• Jadon Sancho may rediscover the player he resembled at Borussia Dortmund.
• The injured centre-backs will eventually regain fitness, strengthening an occasionally vulnerable defence.

This could contain the potential of a title challenge, but they surely can persist in leaning entirely on one man.

Savoring the Moment

But then, this is a surprise. It seemed improbable Aston Villa would occupy third at Christmas. And certainly two months ago, nobody thought the young forward as the year closed would be at the forefront of a championship pursuit and appearing as a crucial player for the national team.

This remarkable period should be enjoyed for the very reason that it seems so surreal. When the hero stood in front of the Villa faithful after the match conducting the cheers, he appeared to be thoroughly enjoying it. A feeling he has rightly earned. Such periods are uncommon in the sport and ought to be celebrated.
